89th PPIHC RACE DAY

this legendary race is for early risers ! on race day, Steph Oldschool and i made it to the pits for 3.50am. there was already a 3 miles line of spectators waiting at the toll gate.

Coffee time with Joe Blackwell, Glenn Cox and Stephane Lascols. Glenn is a fast racer from New Mexico, he'll finish 4th later today in the 1200cc class with his KTM Superduke.

FAN FEST

it's a tradition, Fan Fest the night of the last practice day. 40 000 people meet in the streets of Colorado Springs to eat, drink, watch historic racing vehicles on display and some fmx air shows. we didn't spent too long on location, woke up at 2.00 am, werent ready to party, and reached a good sleep very early.

Go Pros are great, and conveniant, but all the accessories are crap. so many vibrations on my bike climbing the hill, that GoPros clamps broke twice, and i was lucky on raceday, some cool peeps gave me my GoPro back when i was coming down after racing. well it sure isn't perfect yet, but they sell so much of those that i'm sure they'll improve soon some better clamping systems. otherwise, i do have some ideas....

at least you can check what it is when all riders are going down the hill after each practice run. most of us just coast watching the view. crusing in the middle of 150 bikes at 14000ft is something for sure.

after riding the practice with high octane, i went back to pump gas to compare. of course the altitude in Colorado Springs isn't the same, so we drained, put again some 112, drained again tried different fuel cocktails. Damn the bike felt so fast in the city compare to the mountain.

PPIHC PRACTICE DAY 3

Last day of Pratcice. Top section. the pits take place on "Devil's Playground". breathtaking when the sun comes up. it's a bit cold at 4.00 am.

a morning in heaven. long fast curves full speed chest on the tank. great sensations. the end of the top section was a lil less fun for me as it was long straight uphills, i felt like i could ad cranks & pedals to my bike like a ol fashioned moped, she was battling so hard and couldn't get higher rpm's.

after Practice, Stephane who walked for hours in the mountain to find good spots and i were exhausted, everybody was left before we realised. and we just stayed a bit chillin with Travis 747 and his cool dog "Baja".

Driving the Boogie Van down the mountain was sketchy. after half way we had to stop for 45mn to let the brakes cool down, the ranger measured 480°f !

THE LONE DUCK

couple hours and few burritos later, Stephane and i were making it to The Lone Duck Campground. the Lone Duck is the closest campground near the race, the owner is a motorcycle enthusiast, and a bunch of racers meet there every year for years. after practice it's mechanic time and everybody work on anybody's bike. they do it all there, change tires, cams etc...anything. the vibe is ubercool and positive.

after manyconfigurations, we decided to check the air filter. it was dead. there wasn't any at the local store Apex, so Joe decided to build one out of 2. because the TR6C offers only a very limited room.

it was a good effort, but didn't work well, the room is so tiny, the carb would suck the foam that was too close. so i decided to take it off and to ride naked. no air filter. it did actually work well.

some of the fastest guys stay the entire week at The Lone Duck, like the Lee brothers or Travis Newbold. i've read about Travis few months back on the Sideblog, and was happy to meet. we instantly got along, this guy is a supafast and nice motherfucker. wor ! we ended up staying at the Lone Duck sleepin in the Boogie Van for the rest of the trip.

Jimi Heyder came all the way from Vermont with his Airstream, we was fast on his 250 RM.

i ran few runs with vintage class racer Joe Blackwell from Ohio. he saw i was battling with carburation and offered me some help "i got tons of jets we'll make your bike maybe run a little better..."

many different riding styles meet at the PPIHC. it's just up to you, but during raceday those tight turns were invaded by small rocks and gravels, i was moe confident with my leg out.

Every morning at 5.00 am before practice starts, there is a riders meeting to warn all riders of the dangers of the mountain, and remind everybody the safety procedures. it ends with a prayor because one of the racer's a priest, and a fast one. well i believe in my own church, the Church of Coolness, but this won't hurt me, and right before hitting the mountain W's, it helps getting more confidence.

Pikes Peak is more known for cars, the race started back in 1916. this looks way more sketchy and risky driving a car than riding a motorcycle. unfortunately i didn't get to see much the cars, as we were practicing separatly, but i could hear the agressive sounds emanning from the supercharged engines. here are few photos by Stephane Oldschool.

Day #2, we practice on the middle section while the cars are on top or bottom section. i thought i was more confident in the dirt, but i actually did love the asphalt section. the only prob is that i'm the only one to race a 60's stock engine and gearing, and it misses some hp for sure.

Bill Brokaw, organiser, and Trial National hero back in the 60's and 70's, i'd like to know more of his racing stories in Europe back in the days.

we practice section by section. day#1 : Bottom section. first run i lose a piece of my kickstart due to high vibrations, second run i get off on "Engineers corner" straight into the trees 3 meters down ! i'll have to finish the week with a bended bar and a broken front brake lever...but no more crashes on the programm for the rest of the week.

We've worked with my brother Jerome and his crew at Les Ateliers Ruby on those leathers for months.
The first prototype for Catalina was great, this one made especially for Pikes Peak is even better.
Jerome came with a new design for the paddings, using Chevrons style padding, and defining
the upcoming Ruby's own leathers style.

i am very proud to have the opportunity to wear, race and test those amazingly beautiful Ruby Leathers.

i wasn't really early on the planning, but the organisation was strict on the fact that the bike needs to be clean and shiny. well that's not usually the case of mine, so we stopped by a carwash to clean the dirt from
Catalina. i haven't washed the bike since.

The Triumph is basically the same as for the Catalina GP, just changed tires, bar and add a front brake.
a quick test ride on the parking to check how it runs with the altitude....not that bad, for the moment down in Colorado Springs.

after a very busy month, i finally got accpeted to race my 1967 Triumph TR6C at PPIHC

my schedule was tight as hell, but i finally made the flight to LA with Stephane Lascols AKA Oldschool.
aster the third allnighters in a row, the flight was the best and we both slept the all way.

Our first stop was at Mr Ponce in Ocean Bitch to pick up my Boogie Van, we then had dinner
at the Blanchards designer's crib. the occasion to share some crepes with true friends. Marc is the co-founder and was the designer of One Industries since he quit a year ago. he's a man of taste and a
living motocross human encyclopedia.

Both Le Admiral and i were invited to participate at the groupshow organised by The Southsiders during their 3rd year anniversary party. amazing venue, cool people, nice rides and great global vibe. we loved it.

after the party on our way to sleep somewhere in the pink city, my brother Jerome got hit by a drunk driver. too drunk to see the light was red for him. bim. i saw the crash in my mirror. Jerome is tough and only got serious browses while his 71 Triumph got more damages. it should be alright, we stopped by Ateliers Chatokhine on our way back to Paris to leave the Trump in the best capable hands.

Tuesday 30th was an epic day. till the very last minute i didn't know if i was gonna make it or not.

i had to drop off my Triumph in Wilmington before 8pm otherwise i would have been disqualified for the race. wahh such a sketchy situation. i'm shipping my bike all the way from France and i may miss the event. after lots of phone talk we finally drove to the airport with Phil Toselli. after long wait we finally had the bike and left the airport at 7.23pm. got there at 7.54, but i still needed to uncrate the bike and also put it back on wheels. as i was the very last racer to register, i was very welcome and everybody was stoked. such a good moment. i spotted Kyio's Cub and Yoshi's Yamaha, and a beautiful 40's HD hillclimber.

After Garage Company, Le Admiral and i went to coolest man ever Steve Zeitzoff's, and ran into Atiba Jefferson who was just coming back from a day with all the OG Bones Brigade members. Stacy Peralta, Lance Mountain, Steve Caballero, Mike Mc Gill, Tony Hawk, Tommy Guerrero, Rodney Mullen.

he was so stoked. 30mn later we ended up joining Tony Hawk for a drink before Zeitzoff and Atiba decided it was time for a ride to the Jumbo's, i couldn't miss this shot of Birdman and Atiba in the 66 beetle.

my man Pommier talked to me about Kyio's Tiger Cub, but let me tell you this is one of the sweetest bike

FLEA MARKET TREASURE

a week ago, i was lookin for some cool stuff at a local fleamarket when i got attracted by a leather racing pant in a booth. what i finally got was way way way better than a vintage race pant. i started to talk with the guy about leathers, then motorcycle, he finally told me that Flat Track was his life, he was racing the nationals in expert. Mike had to give up on his sweet dreams just few weeks before passing pro, due to a bad crash on the oval. Broken pelvis in 4 pieces and some seriously hard pain. "oh yeah u were racing shorttracks in the 70's ! is there a chance u have some photos from the glory past ?" "oh yes i got copies..." wow, i almost collapsed. the photos were very powerfull, and the guy Mike show some serious agressive riding style. i couldn't stop watchin every details on the copies. Mike was proud of that and he sure can, cuz it seems to me that this guy was rulin back in the 70's. He made my day. check out those amazing old photos, thanks to Mike Parr for sharing.

V and i are finally on the road. after a pretty hectic trip we finally reached San Diego. 23hrs, thank you Volcano. We made a stop at Mr Ponce 's crib in Ocean Bitch for a coffee and a hug. i took his drill and then drove in the Boogie Van to Solana Beach for a late margarita at the Blanchard's Babar house.

AJS X SIDEBURN #6

Yesterday, Fashion photographer Patrick Katzman stopped by Le Motel Garage because i had the mission to do a photoshoot for the next issue of Sideburn magazine with him and his mindblowing 500 AJS. it started pretty mellow with few cool ambiance shot in the CherryPalace's backyard, but when we made it to one of my secret spot, Patrick turned out to be more wild than i could imagine, big powerslides on the dirt, The Admiral and i couldn't ask for gnarlier stuff, it was great. a vintage bike has to look good, but needs to be ridden, and the tougher the better. nice one Patrick, and lots of respect for this Amazing work Grand Fred from Montreuil did on this AJS. check below just a preview to help you wait Sideburn #6.

CAMILO REYES - DIMITRI MASSE

Camilo Reyes and Dimitri Masse were, back in the mid/late 80's two very influent and active skaters in France. Buddies in life, they were known as a cool duet, and as a ten year old kid, i did dig those guys a lot for their styles. one smooth, one more agressive. i met them the first time near Crimée (Paris, 19th district) in 1988. 3 years ago, i ran into Camilo at the shop Starcow, and we started talking, talking and talking. like 2 vets eh eh. since this day we keep saying we should do an action photoshoot together with Dimitri Masse like back in the day. well it's not done yet, but we hooked up the other day when they stopped by a photoshoot i was doin for Ruby Helmets. while the model was gettin dressed etc.. Camilo took his board for some handplants on the historic bridge Le Pont Neuf, and i shot few portraits of this two brothers in soul. the light and the vibe were magic, the instant too. and i'm happy to have those photos of two important skaters who inspired a generation of kids in France.

this morning, i ve checked some old Bicross & Skate magazines, found a Ollie photo lesson by Camilo, and Dimitri Masse as the Coverboy of the issue #79 from June 1989...

R.I.P DANNY "MAGOO" CHANDLER

Tuff week ! Another great loss for the MX world. Danny Chandler passed away last night at 51 years old. Magoo is a hero of my youth. he had a very agressive racing style, and was the kinda guy that goes for it no matter what. nobody ever cleared that jump ? no problem he would do it the first. he was always so beautiful to watch on the photos, and may well be one of the first guy to do some freestyle moves on a dirtbike like gigantics inverted table-tops 180's. i still remember very clearly that morning of december 1985 seeing my Dad totally devastated at the breakfast cuz the night before Magoo crashed very badly at the Paris Bercy Supercross. he was hopping Danny could walk again but this never happened. Rest In Peace "Magoo", you still are a great source of inspiration.

R.I.P ANDREW Mc FARLANE

last sunday, i was on my way for a vintage Trial ride with Dr Oldschool and The Admiral, and checking the news, i learned a very sad one. Andrew Mc Farlane just passed away !!!
Andrew was a very talented motocross rider. A true Globe-Trotter as he raced not only in his homecountry in Australia, but also in the US, and in Europe where he finished 2nd of the World MX2 championship back in 2005. he crashed last sunday in Australia on a practice lap very hard on the head and died on the track. he was supposed to retire at the end of this season, and we all feel very sad.
i had the chance to meet him several times when he was racing in the US on the ONE industries campaign and catalog photoshoot. always a pleasure, and a very nice guy. below, a sample spread of the ONEind helmet 09 catalog feat my favorite portrait i shot of him. all my thoughts go to his wife Nathalie and his daughter Tayla. Rest in Peace Andrew.

3 weeks ago, i received a call from Patrice Meignan, editor of Intersection magazine : "dude, seat down.....u've got a steering wheel for the Gumball 2010, would you accept to be our co-driver ? " waow, this is not the kinda offer u get so often. unfortunately i had to say no. An important photoshoot was already scheduled for the first week of may. it's sad, but sometimes business comes first. Anyway, Pat and Jey Noname are gonna make it just the two of them, and they seem to be ready to rule. check the Materialist blog to see their cool set-up.
